How to Make Amazing Jamu Juices, Indonesia's Healthy Drinks

Shots are one more plant-based step toward being healthy!

In Indonesia, Jamu juices are traditional medicines made from roots, flowers, seeds, leaves, and fruits. Every day, especially on the island of Java, street vendors travel from village to village wearing their traditional kebaya and carrying bamboo baskets filled with bottles of Jamu juices, herbal medicines flavored with fruit, ginger, and honey.

From this beautiful Eastern tradition we drew inspiration for our delicious ViVi shots, which you can enjoy in all our locations or prepare at home following our recipes.

Turmeric Jamu | The Gold of Bali

Of all the Jamu juices, the most famous is undoubtedly Turmeric Jamu, a powerful anti-inflammatory tonic with a bright yellow color and delicious flavor, which is the inspiration for our Gold Shot. The preparation is simple, based on ginger, turmeric, lemon, honey, and coconut water (optional), but the result is amazing for your health. It's no wonder everyone in Bali drinks this fabulous natural drink!

Turmeric Jamu is perfect to drink hot as a tea, if you have a cold or in the evening before going to sleep, and ideal to serve cold as a refreshing drink.

At ViVi, we make it without coconut water. We first make a paste of honey, ginger, and turmeric, which can be stored in the refrigerator and diluted with lemon and water before serving. An invaluable resource for all bio-addicts!

Shot of Beras Kencur (Rice and Galangal) | Indonesia's National Drink

Beras Kenkur can be considered Indonesia's national drink. In the tropical country of a thousand islands, thousands of people stay healthy by daily consuming this elixir made from rice and galangal, a lemony herb typical of Southeast Asia. The benefits of the drink are numerous: Beras Kenkur is a flu-fighting remedy, eliminates toxins and lowers bad cholesterol, improves blood circulation, and in the East, it's even considered a medicine that helps boost stamina and male virility!

The ingredients are exotic but easy to find in any Asian market: brown rice, tamarind, galangal root, ginger, lime juice, brown sugar, or honey. The ingredients must be blended, quickly boiled, and strained. The resulting drink can then be stored in the refrigerator for 4 or 5 days.

Tip! Galangal, a key spice in Southeast Asian cuisine and with a delicious lemony flavor, can also be boiled in water for a simple herbal tea.
